BACKGROUND The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is recognized annually on September 30, to honour survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities, and to promote the ongoing process of reconciliation. In past years, many municipalities have taken symbolic and meaningful action to acknowledge this day through public ceremonies, education, and collaboration with Indigenous communities. DISCUSSION A flag raising ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Sharbot Lake Beach. Chief Doreen Davis of the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation has confirmed her participation and will lead the ceremony. The purpose of this event is to show respect, foster reconciliation, and recognize the contributions and history of Indigenous peoples in our region. Following the ceremony, the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation flag will remain on display at Sharbot Lake Beach from September 23 to October 1, 2025. This gesture will serve as a visible reminder of Indigenous history and a demonstration of solidarity with Truth and Reconciliation efforts. To support community engagement, a notice will be included in the September monthly advertisement to inform residents about the flag raising and its significance. This notice will also provide a brief explanation of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and the meaning of the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation flag. Chief Doreen Davis will meet with Mayor Smith and the Deputy Clerk on September 15, 2025, to discuss final details of the event. Coordination of the ceremony will continue in partnership with the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation.
