INFORMATION REPORT TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMMITTEE Report No.: AHC 11-003 TO:
Chair, Affordable Housing Committee
FROM:
Lanie Hurdle, Commissioner, Community Services
RESOURCE STAFF:

DATE OF MEETING:
September 8, 2011
SUBJECT:
Housing Need Survey- RGI Applicants
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: In March and April of 2011, a survey was conducted of a random sample of applicants on the Centralized Waiting List for RGI (Social) Housing in the City of Kingston and County of Frontenac. The purpose of the survey was to identify and prioritize the amenities people would most like to have access to in their neighbourhood and to identify the areas within the County and the City where households would want to live if affordable housing was available. One hundred and fifty-seven surveys were returned and the results are attached as Exhibit “A”. Results show the most important neighbourhood amenities are public transportation access, walking access to grocery stores and pharmacies and access to medical services. Geographic areas of preference were spread widely across the City with the strongest responses for the area marked as “J” (Polson Park, Calvin Park, Portsmouth, Fairway Hills, Sunnyside, Alwington, Queen’s, and Sydenham neighbourhoods) and the second highest for the area marked as “H” (Cataraqui North, Meadowbrook, Waterloo Village, Grenville Park, Hillendale, and Strathcona Park neighbourhoods). This information will be used as a tool for the development of an analysis for future location for the construction of affordable housing. It is anticipated that this analysis will be completed in the Fall of 2011. This analysis will be a useful decision making tool for property acquisition and project prioritization. RECOMMENDATION: This report is for information only.

Geographic Areas of Preference: Respondents were provided with a map of the City of Kingston and County of Frontenac marked into areas (as described below) and asked where they would like to live if they had their choice and they were all affordable. They were asked to number their top 5 choices with 1 being their 1st choice. Some respondents chose to number their responses 1-5 while others simply indicated their choices with a check mark. Therefore data is represented both ways. The first chart depicts the 121 completed surveys that indicated their ranking of choices. The second chart and the map represent all 157 completed surveys and all 605 selections regardless of any rankings. 110
