Fairmount Home – 3rd Quarter Activity Update
Background The following are some of the highlights from July 1 to September 30, 2011 of which County Council should be aware. Comment General Staff Meeting A general staff meeting was held to update staff on a variety of topics including budget, new funding, quality improvement, accreditation, education, and staffing. JBS Self-Service Project We are currently in the middle of a trial where staff can request their time off and trades through our staff scheduling computer module. Participants in the trial include the RNs, Cooks and maintenance, programming and administrative staff. The trial will last six weeks which will provide ample time to make any changes to the process before it is rolled out home-wide in October. Septic Tank The motor, carriage and bio-disk have been replaced on the septic tank. There was a recommendation made that a pre-filter be installed to catch wipes and incontinent products that may get flushed into the system. A quotation has been requested and will be brought forward during budget discussions. Building Maintenance Kick plates have been installed on all of the resident room doors. New carpet has been laid in the 2North resident home area. We have noticed some orange markings on the resident room and bathroom flooring on 2South. We have had a representative from a flooring company look at it and it appears to be paint coming through from the floor below. This may be an issue with the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care when we are inspected however the only resolution is Administrative Report rd Fairmount Home – 3 Quarter Activity Update October 19, 2011

to remove the floor, seal the concrete below, and install new flooring. It takes at least 48 hours for the installation of flooring to be completed so we can only install flooring as a room becomes vacant. Distribution of Meeting Minutes Paper copies of the minutes of Fairmount staff Team and Committee meetings are no longer distributed. Staff access the minutes through the staff intranet. Door Policy As a result of the requirements of the Long-Term Care Homes Act, a new policy has been developed regarding the locking of the doors to exterior areas such as balconies and courtyards. It sets out the times that the doors will be locked and provides the RN with discretion as to when to lock and unlock doors in the secure unit. Café Volunteer Meeting I attended a meeting of the café volunteers. This meeting is held a couple times each year and provides the volunteers the opportunity to provide feedback to the Manager of Food Services and the Administrator. The volunteers provided some suggestions on how to improve the internal ordering process (how food and supplies get from the kitchen to the café) as well as on items that are selling well and those that are not. Recommendation That Council of the County of Frontenac receive the Fairmount Home – 3rd Quarter Activity Update report for information only. Organizations, Departments and Individuals Consulted and/or Affected Residents Staff Family members Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care Ministry of the Environment
