Rural Frontenac Community Services September 7, 2018 Report for September Frontenac Accessibility Advisory Committee Background In 2017, Frontenac Transportation Services FTS, Rural Frontenac Community Services and South Frontenac Community Services were invited to a meeting to talk about accessible transportation for residents in Frontenac County. I explained that there had been few requests for accessible rides over the past year. FTS did not have a volunteer with an accessible vehicle so were not able to provide rides. Rural Frontenac Community Services had a ten year old accessible vehicle that was used very occasionally but it was taken off the road due to mechanical concerns. It was not replaced. During the meeting it was suggested FTS could assist with identifying the need for accessible transportation through a pilot program where they could broker accessible rides for residents. This pilot would track the demand for accessible transportation and projected costs going forward. On September 20, 2017 the County approved FTS’s request $10,000 to fund a pilot project in 2018 to provide accessible transportation for seniors requiring an accessible ride and for individuals requiring a wheel chair to non-medical rides. Update Since January 2018 we have had five enquires to availability of accessible transportation.

  1. A lady called asking if we had a van, I explained we don’t have a vehicle but there were agencies that did. She already knew of them and used them. Money was not a problem for her family. The cost to bring her husband home from the hospital in Kingston was $300.00. She explained that a wheelchair van wouldn’t work as her husband should lie down to be transported.
  2. The second and third enquiry was from two different agencies about the same person. I made suggestions. Since the man lived in the Arden area I suggested using the VON van out of Northbrook. The gentleman was already using them. The issue was the cost. The VON were charging him $70.00 a ride to Ottawa, where most of his appointments were. I told them we could help financially if the gentlemen would give me a call. He has not responded to us yet.
  3. The fourth call, they enquired as to whether we had a van, when we said no, they hung up.
  4. The fifth was a request again for a wheelchair van. They called on the long weekend for a Tuesday morning ride. When contacted by us they decided to take a taxi that was an 1020 Elizabeth St, Sharbot Lake, ON K0H2P0 info@rfcs.ca 1004 Art Duffy Rd, Sharbot Lake, ON K0H2P0 kids@rfcs.ca Phone: 613-279-3151 1-855-279-2052

Rural Frontenac Community Services accessible van. They were instructed that we had subsidy available if they needed it. They wanted us to barter transportation for them. They will contact us again when they require another ride. We have researched accessible transportation services available for residents in Frontenac County. There are two in Napanee, six in Kingston, one in Perth and a VON van located in Northbrook. The VON van is booked most days. It runs dialysis patients Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday it is booked mostly by Meadowbrook Nursing home and for a gentlemen from Arden. It has very little down time. We have not widely advertised the program. It is a pilot project and as such it was to identify the needs for accessible transportation. We have notified the hospitals, social agencies and also the local family health teams about the pilot project. We look forward to hearing from you, about the transportation needs across the County.
